I
originally started scrimshawing in 1983.
My work was mostly of animals, a few sceneries, but
I stayed away from
doing people (OK, I did do some - see pistol grips).
I used both line and stipple techniques and even
did some in color. I worked on several custom
knives and had a couple of them published in some of the knife
magazines. Its been a few years since
I've done any serious work but I have been known to do a pistol grip
every once in awhile. I may post some pictures later.
My real passion is engraving. I did try the hammer and chisel a few
years ago and ended up putting it away after a couple of weeks.
In 2005, I was at a local knife show and had the opportunity to sit
down and try one of the air assist tools. I knew right then and there
that I could do this. I got set up around Christmas time that
year, and haven't put it down since (except for the time I've spent
trying to get this web site put together).
Now that I know how to sharpen the gravers correctly, I might pick up
that hammer and chisel and try it again some day.
